Information
Marine researcher, PhD in Great Britain, research and teaching at GEOMAR Kiel, the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Rostock, and the University of Bremen, and for 10 years as Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research. Her research focuses on the role of the ocean in climate change, biological cycles, and deep-sea and polar research. She has been and continues to be a member of numerous committees (including the German Council of Science and Humanities, Chair of the Scientific Commission of Lower Saxony, Vice-Chair of the Scientific Commission Antarctic Research, Senate of the Leibniz Association, and National Committee of the UN Ocean Decade). She is committed to understanding the ocean as a central basis for life, without which we cannot solve the major challenges of the future. Marine conservation and the necessary use of marine resources must be intelligently and innovatively combined.
